Self Soothing
Self Soothing is our ability to bring our bodies and minds back to a calm state.
Notice how you feel when you’re relaxing at home. Notice your heart rate and energy level. the absence of tension in your stomach, neck or back. The state of our calm mind is our healthiest place. the calm mind is a wise mind and from this place we make our best decisions. We are proactive not reactive. We usually feel better about ourselves and our world so that we can respond to the people or tasks around us from strength.
Self soothing is our ability to bring ourselves back to this calm state after life’s struggles have agitated us into tears, anger or fear.
Why is this important? We make better decisions. We feel good about ourselves. Our hearts thank us. Our bodies are healthier and our hearts are stronger. Even our brains thank us as living in these stressed states affect the brain negatively. We become proactive rather than reactive, and then our families, coworkers and friends thank us for being our best calm self.
So how do we do this? Over the next few articles we will explore the concept of self soothing. We will look at a few strategies for soothing ourselves such as meditation, mindfulness, breathing techniques and others.
So for now, take a deep breath in and release it slowly. Do this three times at least 3 times today, and look for the next article on strategies to self soothe.
